Transforming a Victorian Flat with Bespoke Accoya Sash Windows

– Chantry Road, Clifton

If you’re considering upgrading your period home’s windows, our recent project on Chantry Road in Clifton offers the perfect example of how bespoke sash window replacements can elevate both the style and performance of your property.

Preserving Charm with Modern Performance

The Bristol Sash Window Company was recently commissioned to upgrade the sash windows in a charming Victorian ground floor flat located on the prestigious Chantry Road in Clifton. The client wanted to maintain the character of the original windows while improving energy efficiency and reducing noise.

bespoke Accoya sash windows

Our solution? Beautifully crafted, bespoke Accoya sash windows — the perfect choice for period properties that require authenticity without compromising on modern benefits.

Restoring the Original Sash Boxes

Rather than replacing the entire window structure, our expert team took a restorative approach. We carefully stripped the original sash boxes back to the bare wood, removing layers of old paint and uncovering areas affected by rot. These sections were meticulously repaired using Accoya spliced-in wood, known for its durability and sustainability.

This method not only preserves the architectural integrity of the building but also reduces waste and costs.

A Unique Challenge: The Stone Mullion Detail

A notable feature of this Clifton flat was its striking front bay, composed of seven sash windows, each with a top sash bisected by a horizontal stone mullion. Over time, this area had become unsightly and grey, but due to its positioning, it couldn’t be properly cleaned or restored without removing the sash windows.

As part of our comprehensive renovation, we took the opportunity to access and repaint this hidden sight-line in crisp white, greatly improving the interior aesthetic of the bay windows.

A Warmer, Quieter Home – Without Sacrificing Style

The end result is a set of bespoke Accoya sash windows that are not only visually in keeping with the building’s period charm but also deliver significant improvements in thermal insulation and noise reduction. The new windows blend seamlessly into the existing architecture, while providing all the benefits of modern glazing.

We were also invited back at a later date to carry out similar upgrades in the basement flat, further enhancing the entire property’s comfort and kerb appeal.
